If you've got kids, you've probably got an old baby monitor in the attic or even sitting in the closet in your kid's room. I had an idea tonight and it actually worked pretty well. I wanted to listen to a new comedy album on Lala, but had dishes to do, so I took the monitor and set it next to a computer speaker and took the receiver into the kitchen. Instant wireless speaker. The sound quality is comparable to AM radio so it works well for NPR & the like. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

If you haven't watched Fringe yet, you've got a little time to catch up before new episodes begin again in April. This show just keeps surprising me with its inventiveness, plot twists, and humor. You can watch a bunch of episodes on Hulu for free and the ones that aren't there you can purchase in HD from iTunes if you just have to see them. Although...$3 for an episode of a tv show? Really?

I've been watching Spectacle, Elvis Costello's new talk/music program on Sundance Channel over the last few weeks and while I'm a big fan of Elvis's music, I'm less certain of his future as an interviewer. I was blown away by this performance by Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden a couple weeks ago though. I didn't know the song before I saw them play it here and I was kind of entranced when I heard it. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Two great conversations with Matthew today:

1) We're in the car discussing where we'll eat lunch and Chick-Fil-A comes up. Matthew says "it's closed". I'm surprised he knows that and wonder if he actually knows a) that it's Sunday, and b) that Chick-Fil-A is closed on Sunday. So I ask, "how do you know it's closed?". He replies, without missing a beat..."because we can't get inside".

2) We've just finished reading his first book before bed and I say, "okay, put that book on the shelf and get your second one".
He looks at me and says sternly, "Be patient. Just be patient". Classic.

I'd like to thank everyone who supported me in the Race for the Cure. It was a great day for running, if a little warm. We began at the arena, proceeded to the Boathouse restaurant, then down along the river and looped back up to the arena. The shade along the riverwalk was a big help in the heat, but I still got a little burned.

My folks and my sister were waiting for us with Matthew at the finish line, cheering us on. I'm so proud of my wife, who fought bronchitis and soreness to train for this thing. She ran across the finish line, smiling and feeling good. It was a great day for a great cause.

You do not have to be a professional photographer to do this, you basically just have to know how to turn the flash off on your camera! Yes, there are rules, so read them below and remember...Art is born of constraint, and dies of freedom!

-only use available light, (no flash or extra lights)

-no Photoshop or color correcting what so ever

-no in camera color effects, (as in selective color on the Canons)

One of the few people I would have loved to meet when I was working in New York was Neil Young. Looks like I migrated south about a year too early. Neil sat down with Charlie last week. You can watch it here.

Also, if you like Neil but don't have a lot of his music, hurry to Amazon now, because their MP3 deal of the day is his "greatest hits" for just $3.99. I know, I know, don't get me started on how this compilation doesn't even begin to cover the best of Young's career. If you're new to the music, this is actually a nice place to start because you get a lot of great songs from both Rockin' Neil and Contemplative Neil.

Hunter Museum's William Morris exhibition

We had a chance to see the impressive William Morris special exhibition at the Hunter Museum in Chattanooga today. I wasn't familiar with his work, but I'm taken with these intricately detailed glass sculptures that compose an amazing collection very diverse in size, color, and style. Myth, Object and the Animal will be shown through September 29th. Be sure to check it out for free on the first Sunday of each month from noon to 5pm.

Just finished the Wilco documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. It was on Sundance channel so I TiVo'd it and have to say I thought it was pretty good. Lovins for Energy Czar

Chris McGowan, writing for the The Huffington Post, suggests Amory Lovins as Energy Czar for either McCain or Obama. Lovins is founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute and is unbelievably smart when it comes to practical solutions to energy problems. Of course, I suggested Al Gore would be a great Secretary of Energy in a previous post, but Lovins may be an even better choice. His non-partisan status is definitely a plus and there's no denying he's got the chops necessary to steer our energy policies in the right direction.

Here's a quick blog post about Tom Waits, one of the artists I most admire. First of all, you need to read this blog post at his record label, Anti. Mr. Waits interviews himself and the results are quite entertaining.

Secondly, he's playing at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta in July and I pray I'll be there to see it. So close, yet so far away.

And lastly, there's a lot of chatter online about the new record from actress Scarlett Johansson. She's teamed up with Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio (a band I like and respect) to make a record consisting almost entirely of Tom Waits covers. A) This seems like a horrible idea. B) I've heard pieces of the record (not the whole thing) and it will take some convincing to persuade me that this is not a horrible idea based on what I've heard. C) The samples that I did hear made me want to stop listening to what I was hearing and go put on original Tom Waits recordings. So, I guess that's a good thing.

Erin and I have a theory that this is due to that ubiquitous Feist song that we've been playing for him in the car. He loves it.

I started listening to the automatically-produced "top 25" playlist on my iPod yesterday and was a little surprised to see a bunch of tracks from Neil Diamond's 12 Songs. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It's a great record. If you haven't heard it, forget everything you know about Neil Diamond and give it a listen. He's got a new one coming out next tuesday called Home Before Dark. It's also produced by Rick Rubin and I'm anxious to hear it based on the single streaming on his site. It's worth a listen.

Here's a very interesting tidbit from the NY Times piece on Jason Segel, the amusing co-star of one of my favorite current sitcoms, "How I Met Your Mother" and the new film, "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". By the way, Richard Roeper suggested he'd have to make room on his list of 50 funniest movies for this one so I hope he's right.

And despite his regular appearances on prime-time television, it is only in the prelude to the release of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” that he has found he can now take meetings with the studios, production companies and casting directors who previously shunned him.

In one such meeting, with Disney, he offhandedly mentioned that he would like to write a new movie for his childhood idols, the Muppets; within days the studio had signed Mr. Segel and Mr. Stoller to write the script.

(“I want to revive them to their previous glory, before they became a novelty act,” Mr. Segel said. “When it wasn’t, like, ‘Muppets Underwater.’ ‘Muppets in the Sahara.’ ‘Muppets on the Moon!’ ”)
