I found a story on the WIRED News site about a company in Ireland called Steorn that apparently has a new technology about which they make these claims:
1. The technology has a coefficient of performance greater than 100%.
2. The operation of the technology (i.e. the creation of energy) is not derived from the degradation of its component parts.
3. There is no identifiable environmental source of the energy (as might be witnessed by a cooling of ambient air temperature).
The sum of these claims is that our technology creates free energy.
I'm as skeptical as the next guy. They've taken out an ad in The Economist asking physicists to test the technology and prove or disprove it. I'm interested to see how this one turns out.

I read about this as well. One can always hope for such a wonderful thing. However, I am sure the big oil companies have already planned their downfall. Furthermore, we should just admit that burning coal is fun.
